The Boston Red Sox bring in Jerry DiPoto as a consultant

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweeted this afternoon (confirming a Peter Gammons report) that the Boston Red Sox have hired former LA Angels general manager Jerry DiPoto in a role which he’ll be helping the club in the interim with offseason moves.

The 47 year old has had a very eventful 2015.

Earlier this season it was widely reported that he wasn’t getting along with Angels skipper Mike Scioscia, as the two butted heads over a number of reasons with the main problem being the manager wasn’t implementing statistical analysis compiled by DiPoto and his staff. After reports went public, and the Josh Hamilton situation became more and more toxic, Dipoto announced his resignation for the club, despite the Angels wanting to keep him around.

MLBTradeRumors notes that DiPoto has ties to the Boston Red Sox organization, as he worked as scout with the team between 2003-2004. ESPN’s Jim Bowden continued to note the tie-in, tweeting that DiPoto was hired as a consultant by current Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington.

The Red Sox don’t have a lot to lose with the move. The club is in the midst of a terrible year, and they haven’t seen much bang for their buck on the $200 million they’ve spent in the offseason to bring in free agents such as Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval and Justin Masterson. DiPoto, despite a rocky year, has a solid track record and is well respected around the league. Whether DiPoto advances through the organization or grabs a role with more prominence is TBD – but this is a nice low risk move for Boston.
