Texas calls up ‘Power Ranger’ prospect Joey Gallo

With Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre hitting the 15-day DL, the club has called up super prospect Joey Gallo from AA Frisco. The third baseman has made a name for himself based on his power alone. Multiple prospect rankings have foamed at the mouth at Gallo’s reported 80-grade power.

Those reports aren’t misleading as Gallo has been a one man boom show in the minors. In his first season split between RK and A- he hit 22 home runs in just 59 games. He followed that up by hitting 40 home runs in the next season. He topped that number last year, hitting 42 homers over the span of 126 games split between between A+ and AA. So far this season he’s hitting nine dingers in just 31 games. The power is legit.

The big knock against Gallo is his absurd strikeout rate. He makes Mark Reynolds look like Ichiro. Gallo is the ultimate go big or go home guy, striking out 478 times in 330 minor league games. Thankfully for Gallo, he draws plenty of walks to supplement his high strikeout rate, as he’s posted healthy – borderline stellar – OBP rates.

When Beltre comes back I doubt they’ll be much room for Gallo, but this is a very exciting call-up and hopefully we get to see a couple homers hit by the ‘Power Ranger.’

I’m totally ready for the MLB to feature both Gallo and Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, but didn’t expect it to be this soon.

So let’s leave it at that, and here’s some Gallo dingers for you to enjoy.
