Noah Syndergaard told Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News that he wants to remain a Met for life.
In his debut season, Syndergaard went 9-4 with a 3.24 ERA and struck out 166 batters. During the Mets’ postseason, he started three games, winning two and pitching to a 3.32 ERA.
Syndergaard’s love for New York extends past the Mets, as he’s been seen at multiple New York sporting events, while embracing the city’s love for him. He’s been photographed rooting on the Knicks, Giants, Islanders and Rangers.
Originally from Texas, Syndergaard first came to New York for the Futures Game in 2013, and walked around Times Square. He met Odell Beckham Jr., and even requested a Kristaps Porzingis’ jersey.
Syndergaard still has plenty of years before hitting free agency, but the Mets’ star still hopes to sign an extension, which will keep him in the Big Apple longer. The Mets have four other pitchers they hope to retain—Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zach Wheeler and Steven Matz—and it will be hard to keep all five. In the near future, the National League champion Mets may need to use one of their young arms as a trade chip for a shortstop.
