Man charged with mischief after throwing beer on baby at Blue Jays game

It was a wild scene at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday night, as fans littered the field with beer cans and garbage in protest of an absurd seventh inning. Watching it unfold on TV, I wasn’t too upset about it until a cameraman panned to Blue Jays players, who were telling fans to cut it out, because apparently an errant beer can which was thrown from the 500’s levels spilled all over a baby. There’s video of all of this unfolding, the baby crying, and frankly it’s pretty tough to watch.

Toronto police were on the ball, however.

This morning the Toronto Star is reporting Albert Grummitt, the man who threw the beer, has been charged with mischief and is due in court Nov. 24th. Thankfully, Constable David Hopkinson said the baby wasn’t hit by the can and is OK.

While Grummitt didn’t intentionally throw his can hoping he would get beer all over a baby, his actions ultimately led to the crime happening, so it’s encouraging to see he’s at least getting charged as such.

Throwing garbage onto the field is idiotic to begin with.

Literally nothing good came out of it. As a Canadian, it was embarrassing to watch it unfold. We’re trying to come together as a country to support a team, and because we didn’t like how a play call was handled (it was baffling), we litter our home turf in garbage, subsequently splashing a baby, delaying the game, and making our country look foolish. While the result, a 6-3 Blue Jays win, was what Canadians were hoping for, I’m deeply ashamed for our fans actions at the game. I can’t imagine how different the story would be today had the Blue Jays lost, as our immaturity would have been the front-page story, not the Jose Bautista home run. As stereotypical as it may sound coming from a Canadian, I am sorry for our actions.
