On Tuesday night, Giants starter Chris Heston threw the first no-hitter of the 2015 season, blanking the Mets 5-0 at Citi Field.
The 27-year old rookie had a 4.29 ERA on the season coming into the start, but was dominant against New York. In his start, Heston struck out 11 and walked none, tacking on 14 ground ball outs to his dominance. The only part of Heston’s night that wasn’t fantastic was the fact that he plunked a trio of Mets – Ruben Tejada and Lucas Duda in the fourth, and Anthony Recker in the ninth.
Oddly enough, Heston himself had more hits than the Mets – he went 2/4 with a two-run single in the fourth inning.
Incredibly, this is the fifth no-hitter thrown by the Giants since 2009. Heston joins Jonathan Sanchez, Matt Cain (who was perfect), and Tim Lincecum (twice) among the recent Giants to not allow a hit. It’s also the third no-hitter that Buster Posey has caught, tying him with Carlos Ruiz of the Phillies for the most among all active catchers. If he catches one more no-hitter, Posey will move into a tie with Jason Varitek for the most caught no-hitters of all-time.
Heston is also the first rookie to throw a no-hitter since Clay Buchholz of the Red Sox went nine hitless innings against the Orioles on September 1, 2007.
As for the Mets, they hadn’t been no-hit since September 8, 1993, when the late Darryl Kile allowed a run but held New York hitless over nine innings to etch his name in the history books.
