There were a lot of exciting walk offs this week – homers, extra innings thrillers, come from behind craziness…this week had it all.
April 30th, Rockies vs Diamondbacks – Montero caps it.
It looked like this was going to be another depressing Diamondbacks loss…until Miguel Montero did what he did in the bottom of the tenth to top off this shocking Arizona comeback.
May 1st, Pirates vs Orioles – Wieters finishes the sweep.
This homer by Matt Wieters finished off a long day of baseball in Baltimore in fantastic fashion, giving the club a walk off win in game two of their doubleheader with the Pirates. At least this didn’t happen in game one – could you imagine celebrating a walk off and having to play again in a half hour?
May 2nd, Blue Jays vs Pirates – cannonball comin’.
The Pirates needed this win so much after that doubleheader sweep in Baltimore, and Starling Marte made it happen with this blast deep into the Pittsburgh evening. Nice bat drop, too.
May 2nd, Mariners vs Astros – Springer gets on the board.
George Springer’s major league career has been difficult so far. And even though this high chopper probably would have been a routine double play ball for Kyle Seager if he weren’t playing in, Springer and the Astros will take whatever they can get right now.
May 3rd, Mets vs Rockies – an unlikely hero.
This Mets-Rockies contest is one of your early contenders for game of the year, and the man who delivered the decisive blow for Colorado wasn’t Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon, or Justin Morneau – it was light hitting middle infielder Charlie Culberson, who had a total of two major league homers in roughly half a season worth of games coming into Saturday’s contest with the Mets.
May 4th, Dodgers vs Marlins – Jeff Baker wasn’t the story here.
Jeff Baker picked up the walk off winner for Miami with this deep drive to right field, but the bigger story was the injury suffered by Yasiel Puig while trying to make what would have been an absolutely incredible game-saving catch. Puig sat out Monday’s game because of persistent headaches after crashing into the wall, and we really hope he’s back on the field soon.
May 4th, Brewers vs Reds – taking one from the leaders.
The Brewers are still on top of the NL Central, and they don’t look like they’re going to stop any time soon. So when Cincinnati had a chance to take three out of four from Milwaukee, they needed to jump all over it – and they did after Todd Frazier’s walk off double in the tenth on Sunday.
May 5th, Mets vs Marlins – how bout those Marlins?!
Miami won their second straight game in walk off fashion on Monday night thanks to a single from Casey McGehee in the ninth. Miami trailed this one by three runs heading into the eighth, but they were able to stage a massive comeback against the mess that in the New York Mets bullpen.
May 5th, Royals vs Padres – rallying back.
The Padres fell behind in the top of the 12th in this marathon contest, but it wasn’t a big deal – they scored two in the bottom of the inning to win it. Maybe that’s all they needed to score some runs in extra innings – a little motivation.
