Unlike last week, we actually had a few walk offs that were actually exciting this past week! We’ve got marathon games that finally ended, walk off homers, and incredible comebacks that left contenders shocked.
July 28th, Nationals vs Marlins
The Nationals led this game 6-0 after six innings, and Stephen Strasburg was simply cruising right along. The final three innings were simply a disaster though, as Washington’s bullpen recorded only five outs while giving up five runs on six hits. Yikes.
July 29th, Angels vs Orioles
After some early struggles to start the year, Manny Machado seems to be back on the right path – and this walk off homer ended Baltimore’s game with the Angels with an exclamation point.
July 29th, Rockies vs Cubs
16 innings of Hell. Before Starlin Castro’s walk off sac fly, there was no scoring in this game since the fourth inning. It’s a bit of a shame that one team had to lose after this long of a stalemate, but that’s how baseball works.
July 30th, Braves vs Dodgers
A Justin Upton blast in the ninth inning of Kenley Jansen knotted this contest at two to ruin a gem from Zack Greinke, but Matt Kemp ended the contest in the tenth after a single following a Justin Turner lead off single and a David Hale wild pitch.
August 2nd, Reds vs Marlins
This was a perfectly executed tenth inning by the Marlins. Double, sac bunt, single, everyone goes home happy in the span of just nine pitches.
August 2nd, Cubs vs Dodgers
Hanley Ramirez launched one deep into the Los Angeles evening to end this contest, and Vin Scully’s call of the finish was simply sublime.
August 2nd, Braves vs Padres
One night after the Braves got their brains beaten in by the Padres, they suffered a tough loss of a different way, complete with a Craig Kimbrel meltdown in extra innings.
August 3rd, Rangers vs Indians
After being stymied by Yu Darvish early on in this one, the Indians rallied to tie the game in the ninth off of Neftali Feliz thanks to David Murphy, and won it in the 12th thanks to Michael Brantley. Cleveland is now a game above .500, and are just three games behind the Blue Jays for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.
August 3rd, Pirates vs Diamondbacks
This was an awful, terrible call, and I feel bad even putting it on here. “Natural sliding motion” my ass.
August 3rd, Braves vs Padres
When you manage to turn a double play on an attempted sac bunt in extra innings, you *probably* shouldn’t promptly issue a walk and let the other team have another chance at life. But hey, such is life for the Braves these days.
