Whew. There was no shortage of excitement this week. There were a couple of marathon games that ended dramatically, and a few wild comebacks as well. And hey, even though some of these teams have a bleak future over the rest of the year, they’re not going down without a fight.
August 4th, Rays vs Athletics
Derek Norris didn’t need to hit the ball 400 feet to beat the Rays here. With two outs and the bases loaded, all he needed to do was find a hole – and that he did.
August 5th, Astros vs Phillies
Ryan Howard still stinks, but he’s had some big hits for the Phillies as of late. He somehow managed to punch this one through the shift to finish up the game with Houston after 15 grueling innings.
August 5th, Angels vs Dodgers
A walk off error? Oh, David Freese…maybe he should have tried to go for the inning-ending 5-4-3 double play instead. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
August 7th, Mets vs Nationals
It really has been a lost season for Bryce Harper, and a walk off homer like this can go a long way towards putting him on the right track for the remainder of the year.
August 9th, Tigers vs Blue Jays
This was the first of two backbreaking losses that the Tigers would suffer this past weekend in Toronto. I guess that was payback for the Jays getting heartbroken on Friday night.
August 9th, Red Sox vs Angels
Could you imagine if this walk off homer by Albert Pujols was overturned and called a double? The damn game had gone long enough, keeping it going for at least one more plate appearance would drive people to the point of insanity.
August 10th, Mets vs Phillies
Hey, there’s the big piece again. This was his third game-winning hit of the week, with the second one being an eighth inning go-ahead grand slam against the Astros on Thursday. This hit topped off a five-run comeback today against the Mets, which must have been pretty sweet.
August 10th, Tigers vs Blue Jays
19 innings of pure and utter hell. It’s fitting that Jose Bautista, Toronto’s best player, ended this six and a half hour marathon, which began in front of over 46,000 fans.
August 10th, Rays vs Cubs
Anthony Rizzo is having himself one hell of a year. The guy always seems to come up big when the Cubs need him the most.
