The best defensive plays for the week ending August 12th

We’ve got another week of great defense in the books, and some of these guys really shined and thrived this week as the pennant races began to heat up.

August 6th, Dodgers vs Angels – Kole Calhoun flashes leather.

How’s this for a catch? Calhoun was nearly parallel to the ground when he made this grab.

August 8th, Cardinals vs Orioles – staying with it.

This is why you should never give up on the play. It looked like Matt Adams would be able to scoop up this ball and take it himself, but Nick Greenwood needed to make an effort in to get the out.

August 8th, Red Sox vs Angels – JBJ showing off.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hasn’t hit a lick this year, but his glove is living up to the hype. What a catch.

August 10th, Marlins vs Reds – robbery.

Look at this play from Jay Bruce, robbing a white hot Giancarlo Stanton of his 30th home run of the year. And yes, it was a true robbery – his glove was over the wall.

August 12th, Tigers vs Pirates – Volquez behind the back.

This play by Edinson Volquez was huge – the Pirates took a man off third base and didn’t allow him to score, snuffing out what could have been a big inning for the Tigers.

August 12th, White Sox vs Giants – Gordon Beckham saves the game.

The Giants would go on to tie the game in this inning and send it to extras, but this double play that Beckham started really helped Chicago not lose the game in the ninth instead of winning it in the tenth.

August 12th, Rockies vs Padres – two in the stands.

When one player goes into the stands, it’s something that should be praised. When TWO players go into the stands in the same inning…well, you know the team just wants to get a win.
