Ozzie Smith and Budweiser want to make Opening Day a national holiday

Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith and Budweiser are teaming together on a campaign to turn Opening Day into a national holiday.

The campaign is essentially centered around one of those White House petitions that requires 100,000 signatures before it must be acknowledged by the White House. Over the next 30 days, Anheuser-Busch will be featuring videos from Smith's journey to Washington and from other former MLB stars sharing their memories of Opening Day.

We've seen this before with Super Bowl Sunday, but the effort has never been this coordinated and backed by a major corporation. We'll see what happens with their efforts, but I have a feeling it won't get too far – the logistical challenges around designating a certain day as "Opening Day" would pin MLB into the corner in the future. What day would be Opening Day this year? March 22nd, when the Dodgers and Diamondbacks play in Sydney? March 30th, when the Dodgers open the season on ESPN against the Padres? March 31st, when 13 games take place? So many questions, so little time…
