Towson University in Maryland isn't exactly a large, thriving baseball school like say, the University of Florida or USC. But after it was announced yesterday by the university that they would drop their men's baseball (as well as their men's soccer) program, the players responded in a unique way: by blacking out the name of the school on the front of their jerseys.
Towson catcher Zach Fisher succinctly summed up the reason for the blackout:
"We don't support Towson, so we don't want to wear something that says 'Towson.' "
Well then. Fair enough. Towson is the alma mater of Atlanta Braves president John Schuerholtz, and other famous baseball alumni from the school include Mariners outfielder Casper Wells and former Expos pitcher Chris Nabholz. Despite not exactly having a murderer's row of talent coming from the school, it's still sad to see the program get dropped, but at least the response from the players on the team was unique and appropriate.
