How often do you see a player take off towards second base and get caught in a rundown, only for the runner on third to break towards home and get caught in a rundown, only to be tagged out? It seems like that happens a lot, right?
On Wednesday night in Kansas City, that did *not* happen. With Alex Gordon on first and Alcides Escobar, Gordon broke towards second. Indians catcher Yan Gomes threw down to second (after triple clutching, mind you), and Gordon got himself caught in a rundown. After three throws between Asdrubal Cabrera, Nick Swisher, and Jason Kipnis, Swisher threw over to Mike Aviles at third in an attempt to catch Escobar wandering off third. Escobar broke home. Aviles threw to Gomes, who went to tag Escobar, but completely missed as the Kansas City shortstop ducked under the tag and scampered to the plate for the fourth Royals win. Meanwhile, Gordon was safe at second after that whole shebang.
The only way this situation could have worked out better for the Royals is if Gordon ended up on third on the play. What a ridiculous and lovely play.
