The final two National League playoff teams have been decided, and the preseason favorite in the league is not one of them. The Pirates earned a dramatic 2-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley on Monday night, and the Reds beat the Mets 3-2 in ten innings to each win their 90th game of the season. Meanwhile in St Louis, both clubs were in the odd position of cheering for the Cardinals to beat the Nationals to eliminated Washington from contention, and that's exactly what happened as St Louis picked up the 4-3 win.
We still don't know who's playing where with half a dozen games remaining, but we know this for certain: your five National League playoff teams are the Braves, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, and Dodgers. It's looking more and more like the Pirates and Reds will be playing in the one game Wild Card playoff with both teams trailing the Cardinals by two games for the NL Central crown, but nothing is set in stone yet.
Things are still more murky in the American League, where just the Red Sox and Athletics have clinched playoff berths. The Tigers need just one more win (assuming they hang on in Minnesota) to clinch the AL Central, while the Rays and Indians are currently the front-runners for the two wild card spots.
