Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan is retiring on October 31st, stepping away from his job in the Texas front office. Ryan was named Rangers team president in February 2008, and is a member of the club's ownership group.
This season, there as a growing rift between Ryan and Rangers GM Jon Daniels after Daniels was promoted to president of baseball operations. There was apparently a confrontation between the pair after the season ended, perhaps related to the dismissal of Jackie Moore, the team's bench coach that Ryan personally hired.
Dallas Morning News columnist Kevin Sherrington wrote a great piece a couple of weeks ago about the two needing to repair their rift, but the announcement of Ryan's retirement seemingly designates Daniels as the survivor in Texas. The Rangers are probably better off with him running the show than Ryan, but Daniels is running out of fall guys. It's down to him and Ron Washington, and with the Rangers' record going backward each of the last two seasons, another step back could cost one or both of them their jobs.
