This was one hell of a wacky play from Sunday's Cubs-Padres game. With the bases loaded and none out in the top of the 13th, Nate Schierholtz hit a grounder to first baseman Jesus Guzman that looked like it would be a surefire double play ball. Except…things didn't really go that way for the Padres.
As he went to run out of the batters box, Schierholtz twisted his ankle and fell to the ground in a heap. He got up quickly and tried to hobble his way down to first base…only to get pegged in the helmet within 15 feet of home plate by a throw home by Guzman, attempting to start the double play at home by forcing out Darnell McDonald.
Because Schierholtz was in the baseline, he wasn't called out for interference on the play. McDonald's run scored, and Schierholtz managed to jog his way down to first base safely. The Cubs would get a second run in the inning after a Brian Bogusevic sacrifice fly, but Kevin Gregg blew the two run lead in the bottom of the inning, meaning that all of Schierholtz's pain went to waste. And who started that rally in the bottom of the 13th? Jesus Guzman, of course.
