The season just got awful in a hurry for Mets fans. Ace starting pitcher Matt Harvey has a torn UCL in his right elbow. The 24-year old will be more than likely shut down for the rest of the season, and Tommy John surgery that would knock him out of action for most (if not all) of 2014 is a legitimate possibility as well.
I'm not even going to try to sugar coat this: it sucks. It absolutely, positively sucks. Even when the UCL is just partially torn, like with the case with Harvey, Tommy John surgery will be necessary. Rehabbing *never* works, and the list of players who have tried to rehab and still had the surgery is a lengthy one.
Harvey was having a Cy Young caliber season for the Mets this year, pitching to a 2.27 ERA in 178 1/3 innings while striking out 191 and walking 31. He started the All-Star Game for the National League at his home park of Citi Field. The Mets had positioned Harvey as the face of the franchise along with third baseman David Wright, and that's all gone up in smoke with the tear of an elbow ligament.
The Mets haven't been nearly as bad as expected in 2013, going 58-70 and contending for third place in the NL East with the Phillies. Harvey was a huge part of their season, and his injury isn't just a loss for the Mets — It's a loss for baseball as a whole and baseball fans alike.
I don't really have anything else today. This sucks.
