The Jeffrey Loria path of rage marches on in Miami, as the Marlins owner has fired long-time president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest. The club has also let go of special assistant Jim Fleming.
The Marlins are 59-100 in 2013, but you can't fault Beinfest for that given the dysfunctional atmosphere perpetrated by Loria in Miami. In August, a story broke stating that Loria was considering firing Beinfest and team president David Samson, overruling personnel decisions made by the club out of spite after hitting coach Tino Martinez (hand-picked by Loria) was fired due to allegations of physical and verbal abuse of players. Loria also overruled his staff in April, forcing manager Mike Redmond to start Jose Fernandez in the day game of a doubleheader as opposed to a night game.
Again I ask: who would want to work in an atmosphere like this? Loria is clearly going to keep sticking his nose in team business, and the team's front office personnel are going to have no autonomy whatsoever. I know it's Loria's team and that he can do whatever he wants to do with it, but he needs to let the baseball people focus on the product on the field and try to make the Marlins respectable again.
