Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey no hit the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night in the Reds 3-0 win, facing just one batter above the minimum and throwing 109 pitches in the process. It's the second no hitter of Bailey's career following his dominance of the Pirates on September 28th of last season.
Bailey set down the first 18 Giants hitters in order before walking Gregor Blanco to lead off the seventh. After that walk, he didn't allow a single batter to reach base, getting a groundout, fielder's choice, and strikeout to end the seventh. Bailey finished his night by striking out nine Giants hitters and throwing 109 pitches in an outing very similar to that September night in Pittsburgh, when he struck out ten, walked one, and threw 115 pitches.
Bailey is the first pitcher since Nolan Ryan in 1974-75 to throw the last two no hitters in baseball. He's also the third pitcher in Reds history with two no hitters, joining Johnny Vander Meer and Jim Maloney. Bailey joins Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay, and Mark Buehrle as the only active pitchers with multiple no hitters. He'll look to join Vander Meer as the only pitcher in baseball history to throw no hitters in consecutive starts on Sunday, when the Reds host the Mariners.
