At Saturday's Nationals-Phillies game, Olympic gold medalists Carli Lloyd, Jordan Burroughs, Heather Mitts, and Susan Francia (as well as bronze medalist Adrienne Martelli) threw out the ceremonial first pitches before the game. Midway through the game, when the Phillie Phanatic entertains the crowd on the field with antics of some sort, the Olympians presented the Phanatic with a gold medal of his own…labeled "best mascot".
Well isn't that just special? We've been inundated this week with Olympians making cameou appearances at baseball games, but I think this is the first non-first pitch appearance we've seen from them. And it's warranted too, because the Phanatic is a pretty awesome mascot.
