The New York Mets have started an interesting promotion for Sunday’s home game against the Braves. The team tweeted out a link that entitles fans to a free ticket in Citi Field’s Promenade level, just for following @Mets and @SNYtv. Actually, upon using the link for the free tickets, a prompt to enter your Twitter handle pops up. I follow neither account…and I was entitled to the free ticket.
The Promenade tickets that the Mets are offering in this sale normally cost $12, but because the Mets use dynamic pricing, the cost can vary greatly. For example, the same tickets that are $12 this weekend against the Braves are $20 next weekend against the Giants. So it’s not as if the Mets are giving away standing room only tickets here…these are legitimate tickets that entitle you to a seat, and you could probably even walk around the park and get a much better view of the field.
If you don’t have a Twitter account and wanted to go to the game regardless, you wouldn’t have to fork over an arm and a leg either. There are tickets on Stubhub for Sunday’s game for as low as $2. I’m not necessarily sure why the promotion is going on though, because the Mets sold out Opening Day against the Braves, and were actually over capacity with 42,080 people at the game. Ticket sales for the other two games in the series must be really bad for the team to need to resort to giving away tickets to anyone with a Twitter account, though.
It’s a nice little marketing ploy by the Mets to give away the tickets for free to at least try to get people through the turnstiles in an attempt to juice concession money out of them as opposed to the seats just lying dormant all game. But at the same time, it looks really, really bad to be giving tickets away for free to the first series of the season.
It’s going to be a long season, Mets fans.
