San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain, who got a six year contract extension this spring, threw the 22nd perfect game in MLB history tonight against the Houston Astros. Cain's perfection was one of the best pitching performances in baseball history, totaling a game score of 101, due to Cain's 14 strikeouts in addition to his complete lack of baserunners all game.
Cain's perfect game is the first in Giants history, and their first no hitter since July 10, 2009, when Jonathan Sanchez no-hit the San Diego Padres. Cain's 14 strikeouts tie Sandy Koufax for the most ever in a perfect game. It's the second perfect game of the season, following Philip Humber's date with perfection on April 21st against the Seattle Mariners. Until 2010, there had never been two perfect games in one year in MLB history, until Dallas Braden and Roy Halladay each threw one. Now, we have two perfect games in a year for the second time in three seasons.
In case you're wondering, the Giants won the game 10-0. Hats off to Matt Cain on this historical (and awesome) achievement.
