Dugout Digest – evened up

What did we learn on Monday about the two playoff games? Well, both of the wild card teams were victorious, ensuring that the top seeds in each league wouldn't sweep their opponents.

-Cardinals 12, Nationals 4
-Orioles 3, Yankees 2

Each game also featured a highlight reel play. In the National League, Jon Jay smashed into the wall making a fantastic catch to rob Danny Espinosa of extra bases, and in the American League, Ichiro got creative avoiding a tag from Matt Wieters and scoring the first Yankee run of the game.

There was also a bit of interesting news coming out of the Cardinals-Nationals game, when St Louis starter Jaime Garcia left after just two innings with soreness in his shoulder. He got an MRI after the game, and the Cardinals will make a decision on his roster spot once they get the MRI results this morning. We'll definitely have more on that situation as it develops.

Today, we're just going to see two games, and both are potential elimination games for the Bay Area teams.

-Giants vs Reds, 5:37 PM. Ryan Vogelsong vs Homer Bailey. 2-0 Reds.
-Tigers vs Athletics, 9:07 PM. Anibal Sanchez vs Brett Anderson. 2-0 Tigers.

There wasn't much going on around the league among the non-playoff teams, just the usual fluff interviews with media outlets with executives detailing plans for the offseason and coaches getting let go by teams. If anything substantial comes through the usual channels, we'll have coverage for you.

Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
