Dugout Digest – a failed challenge

You know, I'm not one to relentlessly crap on transactions….but this Jeremy Guthrie-Jonathan Sanchez trade has pretty much been a disaster for both teams. Both players started last night, and were terrible once again. In a 5-3 loss to the Rangers, Guthrie allowed three runs over six innings..his best start yet, actually. In three starts as a Royal, he's thrown 16 1/3 innings, and has a 7.71 ERA. On the other hand, Sanchez threw just three innings in a 16-4 blowout lsos to the Giants last night, and allowed just one earned run. As a Rockie, he's thrown only 11 1/3 innings, and has a 9.53 ERA. Ah, challenge trades….gotta love em.

Game of the Night: White Sox 8, Angels 6 (10 innings). In the first, the White Sox jumped out to a 4-1 lead against newly acquired Angels ace Zack Greinke. The Angels responded with five runs over the next five innings to make it 6-4, but over the next two innings, the White Sox got a run in each and tied the game. It went into extras, and Alex Rios hit a walkoff two-run homer off of Dan Carpenter to give the White Sox a big win, and send the Angels to their third straight tough loss.

Pitching Lines of the Night: CC Sabathia threw a complete game in a 6-3 Yankees win against the Mariners, allowing three hits, three runs, one walk, and striknig out ten hitters. Josh Johnson fell one out shy of a complete game in Miami's 5-2 win to split a doubleheader in Washington, but still only allowed one earned run (and one unearned) on five hits, striking out nine without a walk. Mat Latos threw 7 1/3 scoreless in the Reds' 4-0 win over the Pirates, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five hitters. He also hit a homer….I'm sure he'll take that.

Hitting Lines of the Night: Alex Rios put it on the Angels, going 3/5 with three runs, four RBI, and a pair of homers. In a 6-1 Dodgers win over the Cubs, AJ Ellis went 3/3 with three RBI and two homers. In a 10-2 blowout Tigers win over the Indians, Prince Fielder went 3/4 with two runs, four RBI, a double, and a homer. In the Giants' destruction of the Rockies, Buster Posey went 4/5 with three RBI, a walk, and a homer.

Other Games: Game one of the Marlins-Nationals doubleheader was won 7-3 by the Nationals. The Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 4-2. The Twins beat the Red Sox 6-5 in ten innings. Matt Moore and the Rays shut out the Orioles 2-0. The Braves beat the pathetic Astros 4-1. The Cardinals roughed up the Brewers 9-3. The A's beat the Blue Jays 5-4 in 15 in Dan Straily's major league debut. The Padres edged RA Dickey and the Mets, 3-1.

Today's Games: Felix Hernandez starts in New York against Hiroki Kuroda. Mark Buerhle and Jordan Zimmermann will duel in Washington. Roy Halladay starts for the Phillies against the Diamondbacks. James McDonald starts for the Pirates in Cincinnati. Paul Maholm makes his Braves debut against the Astros. Adam Wainwright starts for the Cardinals against the Brewers. Madison Bumgarner will start for the Giants in Colorado. Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers host the Cubs.

Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
