In Saturday's ALCS game one, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter fractured his ankle in the 12th inning of the game while fielding a ground ball. Jeter's postseason is done.
I like to have a lot of fun at Jeter's expense both here and on Twitter, but there's no denying that he's an iconic Yankee that clearly means a lot to the team. Jeter's nine hits in these playoffs are tied with Ichiro for the team and league lead this fall.
While his demi-god status is probably more than a little overblown by the mainstream media, there's no argument that Jeter really isn't something special in the annals of Yankee history (just like Mariano Rivera, who tore his ACL back in May). The man is an all-time great, and while I love to scream about CAPN JETES turning even the most routine plays into an adventure, I am really enjoying his climb up the all-time hit list.
The Yankees this year might be screwed without Jeter, but Jeter and Rivera potentially healthy next year, the Yankee magic might be back in the postseason.
