Billy Hamilton breaks minor league stolen base record

Cincinnati Reds prospect Billy Hamilton set the all-time minor league single season stolen base record tonight as his Pensacola Blue Wahoos played the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays affiliate).

Hamilton stole his first base of the game, and 144th of the year, in the first inning before stealing both second and third in the third inning to tie and then break the record of 145 held since 1983 by Vince Coleman.

Hamilton started his season in high-A Bakersfield before being promoting to AA Pensacola in July. He currently leads both the California League and Southern League in stolen bases, and with 13 games left on the slate for Pensacola (including the second half of a doubleheader tonight), Hamilton could extend his record even more, and end up north of 160 steals.
