Astros to name Bo Porter manager

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of Fox Sports are reporting that the Houston Astros have chosen their next manager, and it will be Bo Porter, the current third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

Porter received consideration for managerial positions with the Florrida Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates after the 2010 season, but those organizations eventually went in other direcions (Florida chose to retain interim manager Edwin Rodriguez, and Pittsburgh went with former long time Rockies manager Clint Hurdle). The 40-year old Porter is with his third organization in the last four years in Washington after joining the club for the 2011 season. He was Arizona's third base coach in 2010, and served as the third base coach in Florida under Fredi Gonzalez from 2007 to 2009.

Porter was one of the "chic" managerial candidates on the market, and with the Astros having fired Brad Mills on August 19th, they wasted no time in getting a new skipper in place for the offseason before other teams made decisions on whether or not to retain their managers. Porter won't start with the club until Washington's season completes. The Nationals have clinched a playoff spot in the National League, and are four games ahead of the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East.

The other finalists for the job were Rays bench coach Dave Martinez, Red Sox bench coach (and former Astros player) Tim Bogar, and interim manager Tony DeFrancesco, who reportedly will have a job somewhere in the Houston organization for the 2013 season.
