The Houston Astros have hired Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus and ESPN as their pro scouting coordinator. This marks a continued trend of progression by the Astros front office under GM Jeff Luhnow, who courted Keith Law of ESPN this past January and hired Mike Fast, a former co-worker of Goldstein's at Baseball Prospectus, for a front office position.
Goldstein is one of the foremost prospect gurus online, and his writing will sorely be missed in the online community. However, his hiring is a landmark step for writers online, who can look up to his success. Jon Heyman floated the idea earlier today of the Astros hiring Goldstein, and just a few hours later, the deal is done.
This is a very interesting direction that the Astros front office is taking, and I think we should all buckle up and enjoy the ride that they're taking us on.
