Dugout Digest – Rockies Making Noise

DugoutDigest

Last night on MLB Network during their recap show, they said something interesting. They said that the Rockies might not be done in the NL West. You’d imagine they would be, after trading ace Ubaldo Jimenez. Colorado is 8.5 out in the NL West after bad weeks from both the Diamondbacks and Giants. One week ago, they were 12 games out. There is still a lot of ground to make up, but in September, the Rockies have six games against the Diamondbacks, and seven against the Giants. A couple of years ago, we witnessed the debut of Rocktober, as Colorado went on an insane run to force their way into the playoffs, and eventually won an NL pennant in the process.

This year, it’ll be a little more difficult, with Colorado needing to jump over two teams in the NL West. But the team is trying to improve down the stretch, acquiring Kevin Kouzmanoff from the A’s yesterday, as well as submitting a waiver claim for Wandy Rodriguez of the Astros. Neither of these moves are blockbusters, but both should help the team down the stretch (especially if the team doesn’t need to give up much of anything for Rodriguez). Combine those moves with the debut in Colorado of Alex White last night (he struggled a little, but showed flashes of brilliance), and the Rockies could seriously make a run at contending in the season’s final month.

Today’s matchups…after a crushing loss last night, the Giants send Tim Lincecum to the mound to take on Tim Stauffer of the Padres…Wandy Rodriguez could be making his final start with Houston against Aaron Cook of the Rockies…Josh Beckett takes on Matt Harrison in a battle of playoff teams.

Enjoy your baseball, everyone!
