A.J. Ellis knee injury exposes Dodgers’ lack of catching depth

Bench depth looked to be an issue for the Dodgers going into this season. Among the positions that could be seriously affected by injury was catcher. The team didn’t sign a viable backup for A.J. Ellis during the winter, creating a potential vulnerability. That’s now been exposed as Ellis will be sidelined for at least […]

Yankees’ David Robertson sidelined with groin strain

Shawn Kelley, you’re up. With David Robertson going to the disabled list with a groin strain, the Yankees need a new closer for at least the next two weeks. This is a problem the Yanks didn’t have to worry about for the past 19 years with Mariano Rivera anchoring their bullpen. (The 2012 season being […]

Not signing Ervin Santana continues to embarass Blue Jays

The failure to sign Ervin Santana is like the stain that the Blue Jays can’t wash out. Actually, maybe it’s more like a smell that won’t go away, no matter how much scented detergent Toronto and general manager Alex Anthopoulos attempt to apply. Now that the 2014 season has started, you might think Santana is […]

Brian Wilson to DL with nerve irritation in elbow

Dodgers reliever Brian Wilson was terrible in his season debut Sunday night versus the Padres. As it turns out, Wilson may have been dealing with more than simply not pitching well. The Dodgers placed Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with nerve irritation in his right elbow. (As the joke went on Tuesday night, […]

Keeping in mind that we shouldn’t overreact to anything that occurs on Opening Day, Tigers fans rode quite the emotional roller coaster on Monday in regards to new shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Oakland’s O.co Coliseum is flooding again

Saturday’s game between the A’s and Giants at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum was canceled due to rain. But that rain brought a familiar visitor back to the Athletics’ home ballpark: Flooding! According to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser, water was bubbling up from the shower drains and toilets in the Athletics coaches’ locker room. The […]

Freak out during an earthquake? Not Vin Scully

Los Angeles experienced a 5.1 earthquake during the sixth inning of Friday night’s Dodgers-Angels game. While the ballpark was shaken, Vin Scully was not. As you might expect, the veteran Dodgers announcer kept his cool, explaining to viewers as the center field camera shook that there was “a little tremor in the ballpark.”

Compare Scully’s call to the slightly more excited reactions from Scully’s fellow announcers.

Tim Lincecum takes line drive off left knee

With just three days before opening day, it looked as if the Giants might have lost one of their top starting pitchers. Facing the A’s Friday night, Tim Lincecum took a line drive by Daric Barton off his left knee in the fourth inning and had to be helped off the field.

Lincecum said he didn’t believe he was seriously hurt at the time because Barton’s liner hit him on a fleshy part of the knee, rather than the kneecap. But while trying to walk it off, he felt a “dead leg” sensation which made it appear as if the right-hander could be significantly injured. Lincecum didn’t put any weight on his left leg as he left the game.

After the game, however, Lincecum appeared to be fine. X-rays taken of the knee were negative and according to reports, the pitcher was walking around the Giants’ clubhouse without a limp.

Depending on how the knee responds on Saturday, the Giants and Lincecum are planning for him to make his scheduled start against the D-Backs on Thursday. If Lincecum experiences major soreness or swelling, manager Bruce Bochy said Yusmiero Petit will likely get the nod.

Who are the players that showed some promise last season and seem poised to build on that success with even better performances? Jose Quintana gets five-year extension from White Sox
