Rangers’ lost season spirals further down with Prince Fielder injury

Has this become the curse of Nolan Ryan? After the Rangers’ former president left Arlington last October and eventually took a front-office job with the Astros, did the baseball gods cast some sort of hex over Globe Life Park? (Or maybe that corporate ballpark name has something to do with it.) Could there be any […]

Mike Moustakas’ struggles mirror Royals’ disappointing start

The Royals made what seemed like an inevitable decision on Thursday, demoting third baseman Mike Moustakas to Triple-A Omaha. With a .152 batting average and .543 OPS in 139 plate appearances, Kansas City had to press the eject button. When Moustakas was in the lineup, he was batting eighth. But manager Ned Yost was also […]

Have injuries made it difficult to believe in pitching phenoms anymore?

Tuesday night, Trevor Bauer makes his second start of the season for the Cleveland Indians. Since the D-Backs drafted him No. 3 overall in 2011, the 23-year-old right-hander has been considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. Bauer’s star has diminished somewhat over the past 16 months. The D-Backs even traded him to the […]

‘Million Dollar Arm’ is too bland to be worth your time

Let’s get this out of the way first: Million Dollar Arm is not a great baseball movie. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re likely going to be disappointed. The posters, trailers and commercials for the film make it pretty clear this is a showcase for Jon Hamm, best known for playing Don Draper on […]

Could Josh Reddick and ‘Careless Whisper’ start a trend?

Josh Reddick must have lost a bet, right? That was the only rational explanation for why a major league ballplayer would risk ridicule by choosing Wham!’s “Careless Whisper” as his walk-up music. Of course, maybe we shouldn’t use the word “rational” in association with Reddick, who has previously made interesting choices in beard length and […]

Age already catching up with Yankees early in the season

With no AL East team breaking away from the pack, the New York Yankees and their 19-18 record (as of May 13) are good enough to hold second place in the division. But can a roster made up almost entirely of older veterans hold together over 162 games? Six weeks in, the Yanks are showing […]

Broken thumb knocks out Giants’ Belt, likely for 6 weeks

The San Francisco Giants have arguably been one of 2014’s early-season surprises, leading the NL West by two games and holding a 4.5-game margin over the division favorite Dodgers. A big reason for the Giants’ success has been their offense. San Francisco has scored 150 runs going into Saturday’s (May 10) play, the third-best total […]

When a dinosaur threw out the first pitch

Wednesday afternoon was just a typical day at Petco Park in San Diego, with a baby tyrannosaurus rex throwing the ceremonial first pitch to a cartoon friar. Wait — what?

I wouldn’t believe it either, but MLB.com has video proof of this scene taking place before the Padres and Royals played their matinee.

Go ahead and make fun of the T-Rex’s short arms, which probably compelled him (or her — I shouldn’t be sexist) to throw the baseball with his mouth. But considering that he predates the invention of baseball by at least 66 million years, that really wasn’t a bad effort. That dinosaur also got the ball much closer to the plate than recent first pitchers such as Carly Rae Jepsen or Jim Thome.

If the Padres weren’t already well stocked in the bullpen, general manager Josh Byrnes might want to consider signing the baby T-Rex as a reliever. Who cares if the dinosaur can throw strikes? Just imagine him coming in from the bullpen. Opposing batters would be like, “Is that a dinosaur… ?” Yes — strike three. You’re out! (I’m presuming the dinosaur can throw strikes.)

What perplexes me is one of the Padres’ broadcasters (Mark Grant?) referring to someone wearing a costume. Was that his way of attempting to rationalize what he saw? Did he not believe what he just saw? Did he choose not to believe that a dinosaur walked out to the mound at Petco Park and threw a pitch from his mouth?

Your move, Godzilla. Let’s see what your first pitch looks like.

Should Matt Wieters play for now or think about his future?

Since being called up to the majors by the Orioles in 2009, Matt Wieters has been expected to be one of the best catchers in MLB. However, what’s prevented him from being as highly regarded as the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina, the Giants’ Buster Posey or even the Phillies’ Carlos Ruiz has been his hitting. Coming […]

Yankees have bigger concerns than benching Derek Jeter

No one may have been more relieved by Derek Jeter getting two hits on Monday night than Joe Girardi. That’s not to say the Yankees manager was completely relieved afterwards. The Yankees lost to the Angels, 4-1, and Girardi was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in a clownish display by umpire Laz Diaz. Following […]

Heath Bell’s painful three-year slide to being DFA’ed

When the topic of expensive, multi-year contracts for closers comes up, Heath Bell will almost certainly be pointed to as a cautionary tale. Actually, he’s been a warning against long-term investments in relievers since signing a three-year, $27 million contract with the Miami Marlins before the 2012 season. Bell was designated for assignment by the […]

How much can Joel Hanrahan help Tigers bullpen?

For any team in need of a setup reliever or closer, Joel Hanrahan was pretty much the only option left available. (Especially in early May, when the trade market hasn’t yet developed.) Not surprisingly, nearly 20 teams sent scouts to watch Hanrahan throw a couple of weeks ago in Tampa, gauging whether or not the […]

5 Early Disappointments in MLB

Earlier, we looked at five players that have been surprises in the early stages of the 2014 season. The other side of the coin, of course, is those who haven’t come close to meeting expectations. In at least a couple of cases, such struggles could be costly in terms of free agent value after the […]

5 Early Surprises in MLB

With the first month of the 2014 MLB season checked off, it’s natural to take a larger view and see if anything unexpected has emerged. Success in April doesn’t necessarily translate to sustained success over 162 games, of course. But it is interesting to see which players are having potential breakout seasons. A month from […]
