Monday was a crappy day to watch baseball. There were only seven games on the slate, and one was rained out. In the remaining six games, only two starters had a game score over 60, and a total of nine home runs were hit. You can’t win ’em all, I guess.
Game of the Night: Brewers 5, Cardinals 3 (12 innings). The Cardinals lead this one 3-0 after six, and Mike Matheny stuck with Michael Wacha just a bit too long, as Wacha allowed four singles, a walk, and three runs to tie the game at three. The game went into extras, and Milwaukee broke through in the 12th. Jonathan Lucroy lead the inning off with a double, was pushed to third on a Martin Maldonado ground out, and scored on a Khris Davis triple. Mark Reynolds promptly drove in Davis with a sac fly to make it 5-3, and Francisco Rodriguez put the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning before forcing Jhonny Peralta to fly out to end the game.
Pitching Lines of the Night: This will be easy. Sonny Gray lead Oakland to a 4-0 win in Texas, allowing three hits in a complete game shutout, walking one and punching out six. Tyler Skaggs pitched well for the Angels in their 6-3 win over the Indians, giving up three runs on four hits in seven innings, walking one and striking out six. And…that’s all.
Hitting Lines of the Night: The molten Troy Tulowitzki lead the Rockies to an 8-5 win over the Diamondbacks, going 3/3 with two doubles, a homer, two runs, three RBI, and two walks. In the loss, Gerardo Parra went 3/4 with a solo homer. Rene Rivera powered the Padres to a 6-4 win in San Francisco, going 2/5 with a double, a homer, and five RBI. In the Cardinals’ loss to the Brewers, Matt Holliday went 3/6 a double, a homer, and two RBI. Carlos Santana snapped out of his cold spell in Cleveland’s loss in Anaheim, going 2/4 with a homer and three RBI.
Other Games: The White Sox beat the reeling Rays 7-3. The Reds and Cubs were postponed by rain.
What You Missed: The Nationals will be missing Bryce Harper for the next two months – at least. The Eugene Emeralds’ Star Wars jerseys are Boba Fett themed. White Sox rookie Jose Abreu has been dominant thus far. Carlos Gomez made a young girl cry – in the best way possible. This week in replay.
Today’s Games: Jon Niese and Cole Hamels will face off in Philly. C.C. Sabathia and the Yankees host the Mariners and some guy named Cano. Charlie Morton and Chris Tillman will duel in Baltimore. Jeff Samardzija and Alfredo Simon will try to tango again in Cincinnati. Alex Wood and Jose Fernandez will face off in a rematch of their awesome battle from last week. Scott Kazmir and Martin Perez will start against one another in Texas. Kyle Lohse starts for the Brewers in St. Louis against Lance Lynn. Justin Verlander and Jose Quintana will be matched up in Chicago. Zack Greinke starts for the Dodgers in Minnesota. Gio Gonzalez starts for the Nationals in Houston. Matt Cain and the Giants host the Padres. Corey Kluber and Jered Weaver will hopefully put zeroes on the board in Anaheim.
National TV: Mariners-Yankees (7 PM, MLB Network), Rays-Red Sox (7 PM, MLB Network)
MLB.tv Free Game: Tigers-White Sox (8 PM)
Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
