Dugout Digest: Streaking Brewers Are Locking Up NL Central

DugoutDigest

The Brewers beat the Mets 6-1 yesterday, with Shaun Marcum pitching 7 quality innings (1 run on 6 hits and a walk, with 3 K’s). It was their 20th win in their last 23 games, and moved them to 7 and a half games up in the NL Central. It has been quite a run;

  • They’ve outscored their opponents 100 to 53
  • John Axford has saved almost half the wins (9)
  • Zack Greinke is 5-0 during the span with a 1.57 ERA
  • Yovani Gallardo has two wins – both times beating JA Happ of the Astros
  • Prince Fielder is hitting .383/.465/.642 in the last 23 games
  • Most of the games (16) came at home, but they are 6-1 on the road
  • And, most importantly, the Brewers have gone from a half game behind the Cardinals in the Central to having the largest lead of any division leader

If Milwaukee plays .500 ball the rest of the way, they’ll now finish with 92 wins. For St. Louis to catch them, they’ll need to play at a .700 clip. Not a bad place to be for the Brew Crew.

Also last night: Rich Harden was great, striking out 11 Jays in 7 shutout innings as the A’s won 2-0; a walk-off grand slam by Ryan Zimmerman lifted the Nationals over the Phillies; Torii Hunter went deep twice, with Mike Trout adding a homer of his own, as the Angels beat the Os 8-3; Russell Martin hit two home runs for the Yankees, with Phil Hughes helping shut down the Twins on the other side of the ball in their 8-1 win;  and much more.

What to watch tonight: The Indians try to close the gap in the AL Central as they face off with the Tigers; Tim Wakefield goes for win number 200 against the Royals; and former Rays go head-to-head with Edwin Jackson starting for the Cardinals and Matt Garza on the mound for the Cubs. Full schedule with probable pitchers here.
