MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner passes away at 51

Michael Weiner, the executive director of the MLB Players Association, has passed away following a 15 month battle with brain cancer. Weiner was just 51 years old.

Weiner became executive director of the MLBPA four years ago, replacing the controversial Donald Fehr. He was popular among both the players and the league, and was responsible for leading the negotiations of the newest collective bargaining agreement.

Weiner's death comes nearly a year after the death of Marvin Miller, the former MLBPA head who made the union one of the most powerful in the country. While a replacement for Weiner hasn't been officially named yet, a succession plan was put into motion last summer that should lead to former Detroit Tiger (among other teams) Tony Clark taking over.
