Jose Fernandez's story has been well-documented this year. His journey from Cuba to America is well-known by now, and is more than enough to tug on your heartstrings. Before the announcement of the Rookie of the Year award winners on Monday, Fernandez was being interviewed at Marlins Park – when he was surprised by his grandmother, who he hadn't seen since he left Cuba at age 15. Their reunion was an extremely emotional moment, and even humanized Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria a little bit.
Fernandez was announced as the NL Rookie of the Year on Monday, with his mother and grandmother sitting alongside him for the announcement. Knowing everything they've gone through to get where they are now, the award is that much sweeter.
