According to numerous reports, the new manager of the Seattle Mariners will be current Tigers hitting coach and former Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon.
McClendon had served as a coach on Jim Leyland's staff in Detroit since 2006, starting out as bullpen coach for the 2006 season before shifting to the hitting coach position in 2007. In his five years at the helm of the Pirates, the club went 336-446, bottoming out at 62-100 in his first year.
But what McClendon is most infamous for is this incident in Pittsburgh in 2001, where he "stole" first base and brought it back to the dugout after being ejected from the game. The Mariners initially interviewed McClendon for their managerial job after the 2010 season, eventually hiring Eric Wedge. Now, McClendon will get his second chance at managing, taking over a Mariners team that has finished above .500 just once and gotten out of the AL West cellar twice in the last six seasons.
