If history is any indication, tonight’s World Series Game 6 between the Cardinals and Red Sox (8:07 pm ET/Fox) could be one for the ages.
Both teams have been involved in some of the most memorable Game 6s in World Series history — from Carlton Fisk’s iconic home run down the left field line in 1975 to Don Denkinger’s blown call at first base in 1985 to “It gets through Buckner!” in 1986 to David Freese’s game-tying triple (“one strike away”) and walk-off home run to break the Rangers’ hearts in 2011.
MLB Productions went into the archives and put together this fantastic 1:32 clip of some of the top moments from those World Series games. Warning: this will give you the chills, even if you loathe both teams. It’s just great drama.
Tonight’s game is the first World Series Game 6 played at Fenway since 1975, and two members of that World Series team will be a part of the pre-game ceremonies. Carlton Fisk (who hit the aforementioned iconic walk-off home run to win Game 6) and three-time All-Star Luis Tiant (2-0 in the 1975 Series) will throw the ceremonial first pitches before tonight’s Game 6.
Will we see you tomorrow night at Fenway Park for Game 7? We’ve already seen a walk-off obstruction call and a game-winning pickoff at first in this World Series. Yeah, anything can happen in Game 6. And probably will.
