Scott Boras hit it big with a massive contract extension for Elvis Andrus on Monday, but he won't get the chance to do the same with Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano. Cano fired Boras today, and has signed with Roc Nation Sports, a new agency under Jay-Z's Roc Nation umbrella that's partnering with the more-traditional CAA Sports.
Unlike Boras, CAA has a history of getting deals done to keep stars in one city. Some of their most recent big-name extensions include (but aren't limited to) Buster Posey, Matt Cain, Andre Ethier, Adam Jones, Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Braun. Between that and Jay-Z basically being the personification of New York, logic would say Cano wouldn't make this move if there wasn't a strong desire to stay.
Reading between the lines, it would seem this pairing points toward Cano wanting to become a star off the field, too. So who better to pair with than the guy who claims he made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can? CAA will likely handle the baseball contract negotiations. Jay's people will probably handle publicity.
So, yes, tangentially, you could say Cano is being represented by Jay-Z. But Hov is Cano's "agent" in the same way he "owns" the Brooklyn Nets — he controls a very small part of what's going on, but provides a very public face to everything. Because you know, he's not a businessman. He's a BUSINESS, man.
Don't let that stop you from making those jokes, though. I mean, Cano could go 0-for-82 and Jay would probably look at you like that (stuff)'s gravy. Let's just hope the Yankees don't get Nas to represent them in negotiations, otherwise things could get ugly between the two sides.
