Jose Reyes arrested for domestic abuse

Here’s some offseason news which you never want to hear.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife in their hotel room on Halloween night in Wailea, Hawaii, reports Hawaii News Now.

Chelsea Davis reported (H/T to Deadspin for the video) Reyes and his wife were arguing in his hotel room when he allegedly grabbed her off of a bed and shoved her. His wife told responding officers he grabbed her throat and shoved her into a sliding glass balcony door. Security called police, and he was arrested for abuse of a family or household member. Reyes’ wife told police she had injuries to her thigh, neck and wrist and was taken to a local hospital.

The news is shocking considering Reyes’ seemingly off-field persona. He was basically a human emoji, constantly posting updates about his life on Instagram, about how he always try to see the positive in everything. Reyes genuinely seemed like a good guy, not that it excuses his alleged crime.

Reyes had a tough year in 2015. With heavy expectations placed on him, he struggled mightily in Toronto and was traded midseason to the Colorado Rockies in a six-player deal that brought Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins to Toronto. In 116 games split between the two teams, Reyes hit 7 home runs and 53 RBI with 24 stolen bases, hitting .274 with a .310 OBP.

He’s still got $66 million owed to him over the next three seasons.

There’s no word on whether Reyes will face charges or not. He’s currently out on bail.

We’ll update the story further when more details emerge.
