ESPN releases 30 for 30 Short on the Pittsburgh Drug Trials

The Pittsburgh Drug Trials in 1985 were just before my time, but was a monumental event in baseball history. 30 years ago, several MLB players testified about cocaine use in baseball.

11 players were suspended for varying lengths of time, though those suspensions were eventually commuted. Seven dealers were convicted in the trials.

ESPN’s latest 30 for 30 Short focuses on the trials.

MLB attempted to introduce drug testing in the aftermath of the trials, but the powerful MLBPA managed to prevent the inclusion of random drug testing in the CBA until 2012.

The short features archival footage from the coverage of the trials, interviews with several of the involved particulars, including Lonnie Smith, attorney Adam Renfroe, and convicted dealers Kevin Connolly and Dale Shiffman.
