David Ortiz hits 500th career home run

Cue up all of the ridiculous comparisons and narratives – David Ortiz hit the 500th homer of his career on Saturday night at Tropicana Field against the Rays.

I’m already getting a headache from all of the groups Ortiz is being dumped in after hitting his 500th – fourth player with three World Series rings and 500 homer! Fourth player to hit his 500th homer with the Red Sox! You know, the usual “huh, that’s cool” factoids that don’t tell you much of anything.

Anyway, 500 homers obviously doesn’t mean what it once did (Ortiz is the 27th player to reach the mark), but it’s still a cool achievement. This will surely raise the volume on the Hall of Fame talk surrounding Ortiz, and one has to wonder if he’ll receive the same scrutiny that Jeff Bagwell, Mike Piazza, and others who never failed a PED test are currently being subjected to by the BBWAA.
