The San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 in game two of the World Series to take a 2-0 series lead.
Doug Fister had a good start for the Tigers, even with him taking a line drive off of his head. The problem for the Tigers is that Madison Bumgarner had an even better start. Bumgarner threw seven shutout innings for the Giants, allowing only two hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts in the win for San Francisco. The Tigers only had one legitimate scoring opportunity. In the second inning, Bumgarner hit Prince Fielder to lead off the inning, and Delmon Young doubled to left. Fielder tried to score from first on the double, but a great throw by Gregor Blanco nailed Fielder at the plate. Jhonny Peralta popped up and Avisail Garcia struck out to end the inning, and the Tigers never put another runner in scoring position for the rest of the night.
The Giants got their runs late in the game, in the seventh and eighth innings. Hunter Pence singled off of Fister to lead off the seventh, leading to him getting pulled and replaced with Drew Smyly. After a Brandon Belt walk, Blanco laid a perfect bunt down the third base line, loaded the bases with none out for Brandon Crawford. Crawford grounded into a double play, with the Tigers trading a run for a pair of outs and giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. Detroit would escape the inning without anymore runs allowed, but in the eighth, San Francisco crossed the plate again. Angel Pagan walked to lead the inning off against Smyly, and stole second after Marco Scutaro struck out. Smyly then intentionally walked Pablo Sandoval to bring up Buster Posey to face new pitcher Octavio Dotel, who walked Buster Posey to load the bases for Hunter Pence. Pence hit a sacrifice fly to make the game 2-0, which would be an insurmountable lead against the Giants pen.
With a 2-0 lead in the series, the Giants are in great position with Ryan Vogelsong starting game three on Saturday and Matt Cain starting game four on Sunday. Vogelsong will be opposed by Anibal Sanchez, while Cain's adversary will be Max Scherzer. This series isn't over quite yet, but after a thorough domination like tonight, the Tigers have to be more than a little nervous.
