Jerry Dipoto appears to be out in Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim may be looking for a new GM. It looks like Jerry Dipoto is out following a chaotic week that saw him (again) clash with manager Mike Scioscia. After the Angels’ win over the 2-1 win over the Yankees on Monday night, Dipoto packed up his office and got out of Dodge.

USA Today confirmed the resignation on Wednesday, though the Angels haven’t commented on it.

Dipoto joined the Angels following the 2011 season, and the team never lived up to sky-high expectations. During his tenure, the Angels made the playoffs just once, and were swept by the Royals in the ALDS last season. Many of Dipoto’s acquisitions, including Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton, were mandated by the ultra hands on Angels owner Arte Moreno.

Not to absolve Dipoto from any blame here, but how much of this head-clashing between him and Scioscia, but it’s not as if the Angels have had a ton of success under Scioscia following the club’s 2002 World Championship. In the years following that title and before Dipoto’s hiring, the Angels made the playoffs five teams. They never won a pennant and were bounced from the ALDS three times, two of which were sweeps.

How much of those struggles should be pinned on Scioscia? Dipoto’s replacement will be the fourth GM he’s worked under – maybe it’s time to re-evaluate everything going on within this organization and not just blaming the GM when things go awry.
