Braves minor leaguer charged with kidnapping, rape

Elmer Reyes, a member of the AAA Gwinnett Braves, was charged with kidnapping and rape on Sunday in Columbus, Ohio after a Friday night Gwinnett game with the Columbus Clippers. The Columbus Dispatch has some of the details of the incident, and they’re pretty unsettling.

A woman told Columbus police that she and another woman met Reyes after the game with the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park on Friday night and agreed to go to a bar, according to records filed in Franklin County Municipal Court.

The woman said that Reyes told them he did not want them to drive home because they had been drinking, so he paid for a hotel room for them at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Nationwide Boulevard.

The woman said Reyes accompanied them to the room and that her friend immediately went to sleep.

Reyes then allegedly made sexual advances to the woman, pinning her down on the bed and forcing intercourse. The woman then called 911 and charges were filed on Saturday.

Reyes posted bond following his arrest, and is due back in court on June 2nd.

Reyes hasn’t played with Gwinnett since the aforementioned Friday night game in Columbus, and was placed on the restricted list by the club on Sunday. The 24-year old was a Southern League All-Star in 2014, but I don’t think he’ll end up being long for the organization. There simply can’t be any tolerance for an ugly situation like this.
