Tuesday night, Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit his eighth homer of the season off the Dodgers’ Mike Bolsinger. Well, that would be one way to describe the play. But it wouldn’t convey anywhere near the majesty of this feat.
Stanton hit the ball out of the park. No, really. He launched the ball out of Dodger Stadium, clearing the awning over the left-field pavilion. See it for yourself. And note how no one in that part of the ballpark seems to move because they’re just looking up in awe at Stanton’s surface-to-air missile.

Here’s another look at the play from MLB.com. And some data on Stanton’s home run, courtesy of Statcast.

According to several reporters covering the game, Stanton’s blast is the fifth one to clear the left bleachers in Dodger Stadium history. Willie Stargell did it twice. Mike Piazza and Mark McGwire are the other two sluggers who displayed that particular feat of strength.
Serving up that bazooka shot is probably not what Bolsinger had in mind for his home debut with the Dodgers.
