Each year, the Chicago Cubs put on an event called Cubs Convention that draws an inordinate amount of fans and draws a ton of media attention. 39 current Cubs players and 25 former players will be at the event, including Jon Lester, Joe Maddon, Anthony Rizzo, and Starlin Castro. One name that won’t be there? Sammy Sosa. The former Cubs great apparently still has some work to do at mending fences with some ex-teammates, according to ESPN Chicago’s Jesse Rogers.
Once again, absent from attending is former slugger Sammy Sosa. Issues between him and the team going back several years still haven’t been resolved. Sources have indicated in the past that Sosa needed to mend relationships with some former teammates before he can attend. Sosa was denied entry into the Hall of Fame earlier this week despite hitting 609 career home runs, including three seasons with the Cubs where he hit 60 or more.
Sure it would be great for Sosa to be at the event, but he’s hardly the only ex-Cub great from the past 20 years that won’t be there. Mark Prior won’t be attending. Mark Grace isn’t showing up. Dusty Baker is staying home. Carlos Zambrano won’t be there, but that’s probably a good thing. Hell, even Derrek Lee won’t be there!
Yeah, Sammy Sosa isn’t going to the Cubs Convention once again – but plenty of other players aren’t either. The bridges burned will be repaired in time – just not quite yet.
