Delmon Young was arrested last Friday for an incident that occurred outside the team’s hotel during which Young allegedly shoved a guy and shouted anti-Semitic remarks. Young was charged with aggravated harassment in the second degree, a misdemeanor with a hate crime element and later released on $5,000 bail.
Dave Dombrowski spoke to the media before the Tigers’ game on Saturday and stressed that Young was extremely remorseful, the team would let the legal process run its course and Young would play as soon as he was cleared following further evaluation by the MLB on Monday. On Monday, the MLB reported that Young would be suspended for seven days, retroactive to the incident on April 27. As a result of the MLB punishment, the Tigers can’t suspend Young further if they wanted to, as there can’t be dual punishments. This is Young’s second suspension as a professional; he was suspended for 50 games six years ago for throwing a bat at an umpire while he was in the minors.
Young was in the Tigers clubhouse before Monday’s game, which was ultimately postponed due to rain, but he was not available to speak to the media. Young will miss a total of five games, assuming he returns to the lineup on Friday when his suspension is up like Dombrowski has assured.
