Yesterday, the Rockies finally moved on from their bizarre tandem GM arrangement that has led them to four straight years of 88 or more losses. This is a great sign of progress for a very backwards organization, right?
NOPE.
It turns out that clearing out Dan O’Dowd and Bill Geivett wasn’t there intention at all. In fact, they actually tried to give O’Dowd an extension. Via Tracy Ringolsby of MLB.com:
So when he was offered a multiyear contract extension last week, he told owner Dick Monfort thanks but no thanks. O’Dowd chose to resign. It wasn’t easy. But it was more than money. Things were no longer moving forward, and his value system is such that he wasn’t going to keep a job just to have a job.
Apparently, O’Dowd wasn’t comfortable continuing on in a role where he had to share power with Geivett which is totally understandable because that arrangement is weird and non-sensical for a MLB team. But the Rockies didn’t care about that or the team’s record, so they tried to extend O’Dowd anyway.
Dammit, Rockies. You can’t even make front office changes right.
