On Thursday, the Giants beat the Padres 9-8 in a wild contest to wrap up one of the two NL Wild Card berths. Technically, San Francisco clinched a spot earlier in the afternoon when the Brewers lost to the Reds, but they made it official after the victory against San Diego.
The Giants still have no idea who they’ll be playing in the Wild Card game, and where. The Pirates are only one game behind the Cardinals for the NL Central lead, and whoever doesn’t take the division crown will be moved into the Wild Card game against the Giants. The team with the best record will host the game, and in the event of a tie, things are still hazy for the Giants. The If the Cardinals and Giants finished in a tie, the game would be held in San Francisco. If the Pirates and Giants tied, the game would be held in Pittsburgh.
Needless to say, there are still some balls in the air for the Giants heading into October.
