The Baltimore Orioles celebrate the AL East title

Orioles clinch first AL East title since 1997

Orioles magic is heading into the Postseason. Baltimore defeated Toronto 8-2 on Tuesday night, clinching their first AL East title since 1997 and making their second Postseason in the last three seasons.

The Orioles quickly emerged as the dominant team in the AL East, and first place was theirs for good at the beginning of July.  This season was simply incredible for Baltimore, given that big money free agent signee Ubaldo Jimenez was a bust, 2014 MVP third-place finisher Chris Davis had an extremely disappointing year, and both Matt Wieters and Manny Machado missed significant time.

But none of that mattered for Buck Showalter’s crew. They continued to churn along and steamroll all competition in their way.

The Orioles seem very likely to hold their AL Division series matchup, as they are currently seven games up on the Tigers for the second seed in the American League. The top seed isn’t out of reach quite yet, but the Angels are still three and a half game up.

Along with the Angels and Nationals, the Orioles are the third team to clinch a playoff spot this September.
