Minor league brawl results in six ejections

During Friday night’s game between the Birmingham Barons and Jacksonville Suns of the AA Southern League, a brawl resulted in six ejections.

The chaos erupted in the top of the ninth inning, when Luis Sierra of the Barons hit an RBI single off of Suns pitcher Matt Ramsey. When Birmingham’s Jeremy Farrell crossed home plate, he bumped into Ramsey, who was backing up the plate. Both benches then cleared, leading to a minor scuffle between the teams.

After a long explanation by the umpiring crew to Jacksonville manager Andy Barkett, Barkett threw two buckets of baseballs on the field, and Suns catcher Wilfredo Gimenez confronted the Barons dugout. The Barons dugout then spilled onto the field, and the chaos was ramped up to another level.

All in all, the game was delayed more than 15 minutes by the brawl, and Barkett, Ramsey, Gimenez, Farrell, Michael Earley, and Josh Richmond were all ejected. Nothing like a night night at the ballpark to lower your blood pressure, huh? I can’t believe all of this happened in the ninth inning, but here we are.
